Thanks so much for this post Jesper, I've been searching all over the internet for a clear, concise breakdown of apps vs pages vs groups, etc, and this was exactly what I'd been looking for. I've got a few other questions still, but this was a big help.

What is your take on how now our business pages are on the same group as "I sing in the shower" pages? Now that there are no more "fans" (only "likes") business pages are buried deep in the crap.

Hey Jestper ... Thanks for a concise (and humorous) lesson on the Whens? Whys? Why Nots? of using Facebook Pages/Groups/Apps. Finally, a great primer for my social media clients.

FarmVille is a perfect example of why it isn't a good strategy to use an application for your long term efforts. It is a really great and viral campaign, but could you see a game as a strategy for communicating long term with your fans? 1. People will get bored of your app, 2. If you give the app a purpose you cannot talk about other things than that purpose and 3. If you weigh the app towards the page, then the page is the better option as it is created for dialogue, feedback and support.

TripAdvisor is a closer call. It is in line with their purpose as a company and it delivers a service. If they want to limit themselves to that service then yes, it could probably work as a service for a long time. It would probably also build trust towards the company if it would have good up-time and deliver relevant results. But still, it is too narrow to be a good platform for communication. What if tripadvisor want to discuss new features to its app... isn't a page better suited for this purpose?

Well, rationally, any popular service or app shouldn't be removed. But those that aren't most certainly can be removed without anyone caring about it. However, if you remove your Page then you set yourself in an ocean of trouble as someone else is given the opportunity to branjack your name on Facebook.

Please respond with a punch in my stomach making me wrong :D I haven't had fruitful debate in such a long time!!

Nice article, but I can’t agree upon some points you made in the applications part:

“Bad for long term relation building activities” -> Look at FarmVille or the Trip Advisor App: is there any better way to build long term relations?

“Third, you can remove a Facebook Application when ever you feel like it.” -> The same: Let Trip Advisor decide to stop their Application. I think, many people would complain!

Apart from that – good and nice to read. Thank you!

Brilliant guide. I'm surprised you managed to find coherent reasons for a group - they're very outdated in my eyes.
