I am having a huge problem as I feel I have no place to express myself anymore. This blog has turned into a How-To blog and although I like that aspect of the blog, I still want it to be more than that. I want it to be my complete footprint online. It shall be the resource people can turn to when they want help with their social media stuff, but it should also reflect more of my personality.

Where I want to take this blog

I want to be able to write reviews of books I read, I want to be able to write about my days in the office and I want to be able to share stuff more spontaneously. The how to posts I write today I spend between 1-5 hours on. That is not including the time I spend researching, testing and developing what I write about.

No worries, Tutorials will continue

I want to continue doing that, but under a different umbrella. Thus I registered a new domain.

I won’t tell you the name of the domain just yet, as I want everything to be up and running when I direct your attention to that platform. I expect it to be up sometime mid next week. For the past few weeks I have been exploring the world of Facebook Apps. I am currently creating a full tutorial on how to set up a Facebook App and how to run basically anything on Facebook that you need for your business to grow.

My final goal is to integrate your CMS completely with the Facebook platform making your work load a lot less demanding considering you have to work on both your website, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr etc etc. I will help you do all this from one single CMS.

For this practice I will use Wordpress or Drupal (haven’t decided yet), but the connections are universal and as long as your CMS publishes pure xhtml strict 1.0 and some format of RSS/ATOM you’ll be able to follow that class. The hosting I’ll be using is HostGator.

So what should you do?

Well, for those of you who don’t want to hear me talk about clips from TED or want to listen in on my thoughts on the hidden web. You should probably consider unsubscribing to my RSS-feed. Actually, wait a week until I launch my new stuff.

That way I will stay more relevant and happy at the same time. That way I’ll be able to say “Fuck the free world” whilst not alienating those of you who are just here to learn. One place for the tutorials, and one place for the stuff I have in my head.

It is time to let loose of some boundaries. Or as the Swedish Volvo commercial tune said: “Releeeeeaaaase meeeeeee”.

“I am the wilderness locked in a cage
I am a growing force you kept in place
I am a tree reaching for the sun
Please don’t hold me down
Please don’t hold me down

I am a rolling wave without the motion
A glass of water longing for the ocean
I am an asphalt flower breaking free but you keep stopping me
Release me
Release me

I am the rain that’s coming down on you
That you shielded yourself from with a roof
I am the fire burning desperately but you’re controlling me
Release me
Release me”

Here are some short stories:

GoWalla goes social
One funny story from GoWalla was that they are trying to make their check in into a more social event. One thing they tried out was sitting outside an airport waiting for people to check in as they landed. They then asked a person if he or she wanted a ride when they got out of security. The first two people answered yes without really needing a ride, just wanting to know if it worked. Then there was this woman who they actually got to drive somewhere .

Neat feature for though and a hint on where those services (now patented by Google) will turn out to be.

Seesmic Look’s good
Yes, I did put the apostrophe in the correct place. More on this later. Seesmic is rockin and so they deserve their own post.

Online Games – Sebastian from playfish.com
Create your app off facebook. Launch it on Facebook, then launch them on other platforms using Facebook as your social hub through which the players can connect to each other.

Export actions that you feel strongly about, that you like, such as replays. You can post them on external “youtube-alike” platforms and then post them on Facebook.

No top ten applications on the iPhone are social. Many are Games. Challenge coming up.

Pop Caps takeaways
Real ID is accelerating social gaming. Knowing who you play against seems to actually increase the popularity in social gaming online.

more to come… need to watch this once again

You’re one of those companies out there who has understood that the web is nothing static. You understand that there is no such thing as “building a website”, but you know that you have to “develop you website” continuously. You get that the search engines bring you about 40% of your traffic and that the SEO traffic seems to convert better than the other traffic.

Good for you, cause this blog post is for you to keep.

Setting an online budget

When you set an online budget you’ll have to break it into at least four parts. One part for infrastructure, one for fuel, one for research and one for development.

Infrastructure

Fuel

Research

Development

The infrastructure budget aims at giving you a framework from which you can launch content that users can use in their online activities. The fuel is the content, the media spend and the engagement you put into giving your content the proper context so that people find you and talk to you.

The research part is the funds you need to put aside to stay in touch with reality. You should never end up developing your website for today and thus you have to continuously research the web so that you always can develop for the future. Last but most important part is that of development. You should always develop your website, it should never stop. There is nothing such as a website project with a start and a finish. There is only continuous development. That’s it.

Setting an SEO budget

Your SEO budget falls within all these four parts of your online budget. You need to make the investment in infrastructure so that your content becomes shareable, crawlable and findable. You’ll have to buy marketing so that your stuff is searched for, and you need to acquire links (buy’em or earn’em) so that you rank for those search terms. You’ll have to keep on doing your research as you cannot test it all on your own.

There are millions of blogs and websites out there that share their experiences and empirical tests. Go find them, subscribe to them and then steal from them. Then you have the development part which both includes buying websites, setting them up in your own network, as well as developing new features on your website that makes it worth linking to you again and again and again.

Disposition of budget

The initial investment in infrastructure is all dependent upon where you stand and what type of technology you would like to build in. Always think communication first and then think technology. Never think of it as in “hey, I want to build this in Wordpress or .Net”. That’s a not so smart thing to do and it will always make your project more expensive than if you first decide what to communicate and then look at what to use to convey this goal.

1. Infrastructure – 30%

Anyhow, here are some things you need to put a price tag at this portion of the project:

Communication platform

KPI analysis, implementation of analytics tool

Wireframes and Information architecture

Function specification

Second opinion on SEO work (you always need a second opinion – always!!)

Design

I don’t list them all, cause this is what you are used to do when you develop for the web. I would say this part will take about 30% of your budget. If it takes a lot more than that, then you are building too expensively. Most of you just want to publish content that people can interact with. You don’t need expensive stuff to do that. Focus on the communication and the rest will follow.

2. Fuel – 40%

This part of the project is all about your creativity. You can make even the most dull website seem attractive either through changes in the design or by publishing neat and sweet blog posts. This part is the largest chunk of your budget and should focus on:

Video, blog posts, images

Guides, white papers and tools

PPC budget, Guest posts

Other marketing activities

You might wonder what the heck this has to do with SEO as nothing seems to be talking about black ops methods, tweaking code and other such activities that you usually hear about when people speak of SEO. Well, I would say 90% of SEO is about producing neat content that people like. Even black hat projects have to be smart and fill a purpose if they are to work on the long term. You have to do your work right to begin with. Then it is all about making it good.

3. Research – 10%

I usually do my research on my way to and from work. I use my iPhone to find new sources for information I spend about two hours a day doing research and I think anyone who want to stay on top should do this. Naturally you think… what the heck… why does he say two hours and then write 10%. Well, even though I don’t work 20 hours per day I think you’ll need to have about 10% of your people’s time doing research.

Reading from your RSS subscriptions – new techniques and link bait tactics

Brand watching your own brand

Watching your competitors and how they move in the serps

Reading patents from Google, Facebook, Twitter, Bing, Yahoo

I am sure there are other ways to do your online research. Especially if you are willing to go deep into investigating what’s in the hidden web. But that’s an article on its own.

4. Development – 20%

You should never stop developing your website (huh.. have I said that before in this article). You can do A/B split testing through Google or you can do multivariate testing through your analytics tool such as through Test & Target from Omniture. You can develop tools for your users that they can use on their platforms and you can tweak your navigation, sub pages or internal linking so that any user can reach all your content with three clicks.

You can develop some new display of data or let your graphical display evolve. The most important thing isn’t what you do but that you do it. You cannot stop developing your website. If you constantly develop then you’ll be ready when you’ll have to adapt quickly. There will be problems up the road that you cannot foresee, and opportunities that you certainly don’t want to miss out on. If you work with continuous development you’ll be much better situated than the others that don’t.

Plus, you’ll get links, better rankings and a website that seems to be alive. Such websites are more intriguing and exciting to return to even for a bot crawling your stuff. If they see that you change often, then they’ll have to return often.

This portion also includes test projects that you put up on other domains before you launch them on your own website. You should buy one or two domains every month just for the laugh of it. Put up projects on these websites that you are interested in testing for your main website and see how they affect your rankings, your traffic and your general brand volumes and activity.

Concluding Remarks

The above statements has to be amended with each project but it gives you a rough estimate of how you should work with your online budget and in particular your SEO budget. If you get one thing from this post, you get that you need more than just build a thing and put it out there. You need to do stuff with it in order to make it fly. yadayada….

Love ya.

//Jesper

I got asked on Twitter about what this article from Read Write web would affect search engine optimization in the future. I haven’t written anything on SEO for a while so I thought I might take the opportunity to write a bit more extensively on what I believe to be the most important aspects to take into account for the coming year.

1. ATOM PuSH not really the issue here

The article talks about ATOM PuSH functionality that would help you as a publisher to get your content indexed faster in Google. This will not in itself change the way you rank in the search engine. You still have to have crawlable content, it still needs recommendations through links and it still needs to be well written.

What it really changes is the fetching method. Up until now, Google have been fetching content with regards to relevancy. The article however, says they are to start fetching content based on how new it is. I don’t know if this will effect the search result pages in any significant way, but one could possibly assume that Google will rank popular content, ie. content that is subscribed to by a lot of other people, as something that should rank higher than other content which is not.

2. Change over Time

In the beginning of SEO it was all about volume. Nowadays volume is only one property to which Google evaluates your content. The property I believe will grow in importance the most over the next couple of years is that of change over time. Change over time is the only way at which you can look at a piece of content and determine its relevancy on a real time web. It is the only way of finding spam and it is the only way of determining which content is the most relevant “right now”.

Actually. What we have to look at is the second derivative of motion. Is the sum of something accelerating or is it decelerating.

Think of two pieces of content. One which has a lot of links, and one with lesser links. Think of the one with lesser links getting one link the first day, two links the second day, three links the third day whilst the one with more links is getting one link each day. Let’s say the content with the lesser links was newer than the one with more links. Which would you think was more relevant? The one accelerating with one link per day, or the one receiving one link per day? Tough question right?

Let’s say we add Twitter to this. The publisher of the content has 1500 followers and the content got retweeted 50 times on the day of release. The older content didin’t get retweeted at all as it was produced when there was no Twitter. The relevancy factor or news value of the story then becomes 50/1500 (my own kpi ). With regards to all other content out there. I am getting sidetracked. But what I am getting at is that I believe Google will look more and more on change over time as it sort of shows how relevant a piece of content is at this place in time.

Thus Google will index a content higher in the serp if it comes from a resource that usually get shared. They will do this over a time period to see if this content also was as good as the old stuff. If it doesn’t receive the same change in time links as other content in the vertical or serp, it will decrease in value over time and fall in the serps. This is somewhat a contradiction to the “authority” paradigm that is being talked about in SEO circles.

In the future, authority will only give you an edge, as it will put you there on the first page to get “tested”. Yet if your content does not pick up speed, it will decrease in value over time. Regardless if your site in volume is much stronger than other websites.

3. Localization

There is a localization revolution going on in the serps right now. Search for “lawyers in washington” and you’ll see what I mean. If you have a physical presence and an address listed in Google, you will have a much better visibility than those who don’t.

Add to that the GEO-tagging possibility in the Meta of your web pages and you’ll be able to have an edge over anyone with a less local touch to their business.

The address helps people find stuff in a certain place, the GEO tag helps them retrieve stuff that is more relevant to them given their geographical presence.

Naturally, localization of the serps have everything to do with Google wanting to become as dominant offline as they have become online. I am looking forward to seeing the results of this.

4. Socialization

This is a change I don’t necessarily like or enjoy that much. In the future my search results will become dependent upon my interactions with others. This might play well if it plays within a certain time frame, but if they do as they have done with the personalized search I am not that enthusiastic.

I would like Google to look at sequence within a session rather than look at what I have searched for or talked to my friends about “throughout all of time”.

Socialization should be a factor as we do trust stuff from people we know more about than those which we know nothing about. Hence the assumption would be that we would find content more relevant if it came from those we have a relation to. However, I don’t believe that this is entirely the case. It might just be so that our serps will get overhauled with stuff we don’t want to see, just as blog posts have killed information searches to a large extent.

Concluding thoughts

Well, I am unsure if my brain has woken up enough to make any sense, but here you go. These are four of the most important aspects I see becoming more and more relevant when thinking of search engine optimizing your webpages.

Have you ever thought about what the Internet consists of? Does it have a mass? Does it actually physically exist else than as an abstract being we’re able to use to express ourselves and communicate.

I started thinking about this when I was watching a commercial on web-tv the other day. I thought “Yes. The Internet must be a matter as it has a mass and it has a volume. In order to communicate through the web, it needs to reflect light. Otherwise we would not be able to see it. Considering even light bends when effected by gravity, and the web reflects light, it must too consist of matter. So, what is the density of the web and how can we bend it?”

I asked Twitter, and the only thing I got back was a couple of “stop taking shroomes” comments. I am fine with that. But have it ever struck you what possibilities a web of mass has? Let’s say I could extract the web in some way or another. For example by using a magnetic field. Then what effects could I have on the information being distributed through it? What type of products and communication methods could I shape with my new physical form of the web.

Sometimes I talk about the future as a place where we might just inject ourselves with the web. Considering it acts like a brain in its whole, is it too far stretched to think thoughts about how we could use the web as a means to improve our being?

I know this might sound scary for a lot of you out there, but many other technologies such as language and reading have become things we depend upon in everyday life. The difference between language and the web though, is that the web as a technology has never had down time. Parts of it has, but not the web as a technology.

In my everyday work, I focus on how to apply psychology to economics to technology to evolution. Sometimes I too have to allow myself to ask you as readers a question I am thinking about. Although not completely sane at first glance, but I wonder. What if the web in fact had a density, what if I could physically mold it, alter it and inject it as a part of my own being. Perhaps that is what the next application of the web, or evolution in communication we’ll be able to see.

Imagine the artistic applications that could be created if we were able to build monuments of thoughts rather than of copper.

That’s what’s on my mind right now.

//Jesper – (and yes, I am writing some new how to’s as well… but this just seemed a little bit more important…)

Yesterday I wrote a piece which publicly showed a fraction of the anger I have towards Facebook right now. Not the community of people but at the rules being imposed on us that work with the platform. The post was not at all constructive, but I had to give space for my anger in some way. This post is more of the constructive how to kind. Although I cannot hide my satire in some places…

As you can understand, it wasn’t only the most recent changes that sparked my anger. Ever since the new Promotional Guidelines were released on the 5th of November of last year, there have been a series of bad changes for us who use Facebook for promotions.

As I hate reading stuff before testing, I have run into some hurdles along the way. I write this post so that you might not.

There are basically four major documents governing your advertising and promotions on Facebook:

The statement of rights and responsibilities

The Facebook Advertising guidelines

The Facebook Promotion guidelines

Developers Guidelines

I don’t know why they haven’t made these one and the same document as much of the mumbojumbo is overlapping in the documents, but I guess they have some reason for this.

1. Planning your Facebook promotion

First of all you need to contact Facebook as soon as you get the idea of your promotion. Especially if you are working as a consultant for a company and you are going to run it on the platform. The reason for this being that you need to get ok from Facebook to run the promotion if you want to promote it in any other ways then through:

Facebook Ads

On a tab of the page where the application/promotion is located

On an application box (which still, but for how long, can be moved to the front page)

2. Copy & Legal for your promotion

You can in no way mention the word “facebook” in your promotion. Neither on your website or on your application. Actually there are two ways in which you are allowed to talk about facebook.

“This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook. You understand that you are providing your information to [recipient(s) of information] and not to Facebook. The information you provide will only be used for [disclose any way that you plan to use the user's information].”

and

“You can enter the Promotion through the [application name] application on the Facebook Platform. You can also find the application on the [tab name] tab on the [Page name] Page on Facebook.”

However, you aren’t allowed to say that anyone has to become a member on Facebook in order to enter your competition, but you have to reference that your competition is available on Facebook and provide a link.

I am sure there is some kind of legal stuff behind this.

They want the membership process to be a legally separate event from your application so that you can never claim rights to the user if you were to become… hmm… let’s say… a new FarmVille

They need to have no affiliation with you or your service if you get sued by a user

Still, Facebook claims they own your stuff if they want too. Ie. they are working like a terrible boss. If you succeed, they claim all the credit and if you fail then they make you the one to blame. Good ehy?

Thus when you plan your activity you have to make sure that you don’t create a value proposition to the user that includes the word Facebook otherwise you might get in trouble.

3. Interaction with users

a. No more notifications
From now on you cannot use the notifications for applications which was an extremely neat feature if you are targeting audiences that aren’t at their computer all the time looking at the news feed. This means that any type of challenge application becomes about 100 times less effective as a person has to see in their news flow when the challenge appears.

I am sure some users say YEY to this, but why the heck did you accept the application in the first place if you cannot handle the notifications? Anyhow… enough of the anger.

b. Become a fan to enter – no no
You cannot say that it is a demand that the user becomes a fan of your page to join the competition or promotion. You cannot make it so that they enter the competition or promotion by simply becoming a fan either. However, you can hide the application tab and only make it visible for those who are fans of your page.

I wonder how Facebook thought when they came up with that one. *sigh*… What if the FBML application is the front page.. hmm..

c. Collect e-mails or have no way to contact winners
You are not allowed to tell the users who won the promotion or competition through Facebook. You can however ask them to enter their e-mail address so you can contact them that way. Considering a natural number of approximately 25% type their e-mail address wrong or the conversion rates fall drastically if you require people to enter it twice… well… let’s say that the fantastic communication platform, became dependent on the very communication form sooooo many people say it will replace (for those of you who cannot read jesperian – I’m talking about e-mail).

d. Entries must be stored outside of facebook
If you want people to upload images, write texts or enter the competition by any kind of own effort you have to make them do this through a third party application. This means that you cannot tell someone to upload an image to the image gallery of your page, but you have to tell them to upload it through an application provided by a third party.

I am really unsure whether or not Facebook actually understands what they say when they make this demand, but I am sure they mean that you have to store the competition entries outside of facebook. This means you can create a Facebook application and then have people submit stuff to a system outside of facebook (such as a database or similar).

4. Don’t forget your own set of policies

You need to add another set of policies such as privacy policy, legal disclaimer etc etc. to your application. This is important as you are liable if something goes bad. Facebook will not take any responsibility for anything happening on their terth.

If you are like me and read the documents linked to above, please complete this post with your favorite Facebook guideline moment in the comment field.

Best,

Jesper

I’ve had it. Enough is enough. Facebook has finally shown they cannot handle their position as number 1 in the social scene online. I am completely and utterly disappointed with Mark his crew. Haven’t they learned anything from their past or anything from the web?

[Update: To clarify. The NEW thing with this is that they are removing the notification possibility making applications that utilize user vs. user interaction A LOT less effective.]

Changes to the terms of service

I was thinking that when the latest update of the terms and conditions came along it was a mere high five to the legislators of some idiot government somewhere. The new rules stated three extremely important changes to the Facebook page terms of service:

You have to ask permission for any kind of promotion

Your promotion can’t have demands of joining a page to enter

Post to wall is restricted to the special privileges

(It became strictly forbidden to promote gambling, which is not as important… yet extremely annoying.)

This did not only piss me off as these benefits were what made Facebook so easy to work with. These ARE the benefits of working with and on the Facebook platform. This way we didn’t have to run a campaign website on the side, this way all the viral aspects of having 400 million people in the same place could take effect as we could utilize the long tail of interests and thus make a buck or two regardless of what we were working on.

Destroying what helped build them

Today, I get a message from one of the applications that has helped to build Facebook to the platform it is today. One of the thousands and again thousands of applications that Facebook has paid NOTHING to have in place. Remember, even the “tag a friend” application was created by someone not working on Facebook. The throw a sheep application was as well. All they “invented” was the ability to poke another member. So excuse me when I say FUCK YOU FACEBOOK!!

This is the reason for my anger (click to enlarge):

They are removing the possibility to send automatic notifications disallowing you to use anything else but their own Facebook Connect functionality. THEY SHOULD GET SUED!! Someone wrote in a blog post a couple of weeks back that Google is behaving like Microsoft. I think that person is absolutely wrong. However, now we can truly see how Facebook is becoming another idiot corporation who is out to work against their users in order to advance their own interests.

Facebook is making money, and they could do like Google and go rev. share with their enthusiasts. That would have been a good thing as we would all earn money from what we do best.

But when a service like Facebook is starting to behave like government, then my stomach turns icky icky icky inside out.

My LAST warning to you Mark Zuckerfucker

I say this as a warning to Mark and the rest. Stop what you are doing right away. Continue doing what you did in the beginning. Open your platform and don’t start setting rules. Leverage the possibilities with the web, don’t MAKE THEM TURN AGAINST YOU. Cause rest assured… If you turn on us, we will turn on you. When we turn on you… well, let’s just say it won’t come in the shape of a Facebook group saying “Mark is an evil idiot”… There just simply might not be any group functionality at all to use…

I read this article in OpenForum that @peter_einarsson tweeted. It was about Facebook Landing pages for business. It was a fairly good article but it didn’t tell the full story on how you should create a landing page for you own Facebook Fan page. I am a bit sick today so bare with me. However, I decided to write the Ultimate Facebook Page Resource Page instead.

Or at least begin to write it… more on that in the last point of this post…

1. Main Setup of your Facebook Page

I have devoted a full post on this topic that gives you images and explanations to each step on the way. Please have a look at it before reading further.

How to create a Facebook Fan Page in 11 steps

2. Create a HTML document

First off you need to start by creating a HTML document. If you are an e-mail programmer then you’ll become an expert in Facebook landing pages in no time. Basically the thumb rule is to NOT use div’s but use tables. I know some of you out there got some allergic reaction to what I just said, but I promise you that you don’t want some browser versions to come frigg with your classes which can be the case.

Good dimensions:

Width: 760 pixels (edit: 520 in the future as is said in the comment field)

Height: 400 pixels (usually above the fold) + x amount of pixels (below the fold)

What you should know before you start is that you cannot execute any javascript or insert external css if you do not make it into an application of its own. I have in an earlier blog post created a hack if you want to put an iframe on your Facebook page. Remember that it is better to build it in FBML/HTML as there has to be a loader image if you create an app, plus user privileges plus a bunch of other things.

3. Create an FBML-tab

I guess it all has it’s purpose. Create and FBML-tab for the simple stuff (or learn how to create several FBML-tabs here + video on how to make a tab the start page of your Facebook page) and use the apps for the complicated competition thingies .

Since I am a decent guy I have created a simple html-template for you.

Download template for Facebook Landing page

This template is blank and extremely simple. Please send me a link to a page you need a template for and I’ll code it for you. (Keep it simple guys… otherwise I’ll have to charge you.)

This is the structure of it:

Dimensions & usage:

Top box: 760/520×200 – perfect for a top promo or an image

Small boxes: 375×150 – perfect for some newsletter subscription of article feed

Bottom box: 760/520x* – perfect if you want to put your wall feed in there

Just copy and paste the code into your FBML-box and start experimenting.

4. Add a Newsletter Subscription

If you have a newsletter it is good to add a sign-up box to your newsletter on Facebook. This works perfectly as it only runs the JavaScript after the user clicks the submit button.

You can create a submit script in most of the e-mail service providers out there on the market. I cannot share mine as it would expose me to a lot of spam injections in my DB. But if you need help with this, please ask here in the comments or by e-mailing me.

5. Run Google Analytics on your Facebook Page

Sometimes I just love the Internet a bit to much. I have been trying for quite some time to run Google Analytics on Facebook but I haven’t been able to get my hack fully working and thus no post has been written about it from me. Well, in this case I received an e-mail with a post that Christian Rudolf had found with a solution to my problem.

6. Integrating YouTube with your Facebook Channel

The best YouTube integration I have found that is out of the box is the YouTube Channels application. You can make all kinds of freaky things if you work with your own applications, but the YouTube Channels is the best I’ve found so far that is just a plug and play thing.

Go to your Facebook Page

Click Edit Page

Go to the very bottom of the Edit Page View

Click Browse More in the bottom box “More Applications”

Search for YouTube Channels

Go to the application page by clicking the link

Click the link “Add to my Page” (do not click Add Application – important as doing this will add it to your FB profile instead of your page)

Select the page you want to add it to

Go back to your edit mode of your page

Find the Application and click Application settings

Click “Add” next to Tab

Go to the front page of your Facebook Page

Find the tab and drag it to the place order where you’d like it

7. Examples of Custom Facebook Page designs

There are plenty of Facebook Page designs coming up. Here are a couple of pages that I like and that you can have a look at for some inspiration.

McDonald’s – Nice look and feel

Victoria’s Secret – Always make good use of the tabs

Starbucks – Impressive use of customized tabs and apps

Ladbroke’s Casino – Nice use of a tab as a start page and good gambling example

Massive Attack – Good integration of fb:comments and music player

8. Building your Fan base through Ads

I really like Facebook Ads as a way to build fans to your page. It is fast and it works miracles if you know who your target audience usually is. The first couple of times you will fail when you set up an ad campaign. Especially if you work in shady businesses. The most common reason a ad is rejected is because of the image you use or because of some excessive use of bad language or exclamation marks.

I wrote a post a while ago about a strategy for Facebook Ads.

x. You tell me

The above four are questions I usually get on this topic. I want to write more, but I have no inspiration cause I simply don’t have the questions any longer. I simply don’t find it difficult to do stuff on Facebook anymore and thus I want you to tell me what I should write about. You can either e-mail me or write a question in the comments. If you want to remain anonymous to the readers that’s fine.

Love this talk from TED. It is only two minutes in length but it really puts the dot over the i, as we say in Sweden. There are so many “truths” out there, so many thoughts that are nothing other than things seen from one perspective.

Now… sadly, my own belief implies that I too can be wrong. In fact, it says that I must resign to that for everything I say there is an equal truth that is the exact opposite of what I believe to be right. This creates some confusion for me at times when I am asked to make a decision on an instance.

Being a consultant is not very easy when you believe that there are no absolute truths. It doesn’t always land well when you start arguing death and weather each time a client want to know your view on an issue. My self evolution in the matter has gone from believing I was the center point of the world, to recognizing I was a mere particle, to understanding that my particle was important enough to have an valid opinion.

What I mean by this is that even though I generally understand that I might be wrong, I still give my opinion when asked. Also, this blog has become one way of venting my thoughts before I put them into practice, or to share my findings after I have found them. All in all, I want reactions. Sweden might not be the best place for them as people tend to talk behind your back, but I need reactions. This blog allows me to reach them and for that I am highly thankful.

I am sure I’ll have some how to’s for you in a while again, but for now there is just so much change going on I only have time for testing and thus the sharing becomes less practical and more philosophical.

What then happens in reality is never very coherent, sometimes not even when all circumstances are met.

Behavioral economics are growing in influence. This makes me glad. I am an ex-econometrics student who has always been fond in looking to the individual rather than the model.
There is a change about to take place. We as humans are somehow starting to make an attempt at understanding ourselves without simplifications. We might still limit our scope, but we have at least started to look at facts and situations rather than models. Yes, some models can still be created, but a model is always merely a depiction of a perspective given a set of circumstances. What then happens in reality is never very coherent, sometimes not even when all circumstances are met.

Behavioral economics are growing in influence. This makes me glad. I am an ex-econometrics student who has always been fond in looking to the individual rather than the model. Well, I love making models, but for me a model, a strategy or a tool set is always flawed if it doesn’t continuously change.

In physics they got this point several years ago as they discovered quantum physics. In SEO, some people understand it as the way you cannot rely on static values in a world where trust is changing as the aggregate value of your links change over time, even if the total amount of inbound links do not. In economics, they have been a bit conservative and we have yet seen the move from static model to individual until now.

We as people change. Not only our physical appearance but also in the way we face the same situation two times. We aim for positive outcomes in all our choices. If we believe that a previous action was not to our satisfaction we will make a different choice the next time we are met with the same situation. Also, a positive outcome for one person is not THE positive outcome for every person. It is all relative over time and from where we start. Our expectations are dependent upon what degree of utility we currently have.

Thus, a positive outcome can in itself become a less satisfactory outcome over time which is something many of us forget when trying to communicate and get attention. We ask the same question or propose the same value proposition as we base our decisions on history. This might lead to a positive result for the person we ask the question to the first time. Second time the person makes the same choice, they the same pay off. If this payoff is not changed over time, the payoff will be expected. If the payoff is expected, then the value of the payoff decrease.

You might wonder why I write this, well, it is because these findings have huge implications on what we do as marketeers and dialogue creators.

Our behavior has to continuously change if we want the marginal value of our actions to constantly increase. What I mean by this is that we have to look past success of the past and always look to answer the same question in a new way for the future. That way we maintain the value of our efforts and get the greatest return on investment.

I will write more on this in coming weeks.
